MARINE FISHERIES CENSUS

All India Marine Fisheries Census was conducted during 16 April to 15 May 2010.  Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute carried out the census on the mainland whereas the Fishery Survey of India took care of the census of Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands.

In both the Island groups, actual census was conducted during first fortnight of May 2010.  Nearly 75 enumerators were engaged in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and 40 enumerators in Lakshadweep Islands.  

The census operation was carried out in collaboration with respective Fisheries Departments.  Sufficient numbers of officials were also deployed as supervisors from both Fishery Survey of India and Directorate of Fisheries of the respective Island Administration for monitoring census work.  The enumerators collected information on the following:

  • Details of fishermen households including social, educational and gender-wise occupational status.

  • Details of fishing craft and fishing gear ownership by the fishermen households.

  • Local fishery related infrastructure, post-harvest facilities etc.

  • Fisherfolks' perception on fisheries management measures such as fishing ban, protection of endangered species, climate changes etc.
